About Our Silver
Our table cutlery is available in sterling silver or silver plate and in ten different patterns.
Sterling Silver cutlery is of 'sterling standard', i.e. 92.5% pure silver (alloyed for strength with a small proportion of copper). The standard is guaranteed, as all English silver must be, by the hallmark or stamp that each piece carries. The testing and hallmarking is carried out by the Assay Office; an example set of hallmarks can be seen in the photograph above showing from left to right the maker's mark, the Assay Office mark (here a rose symbolising Sheffield), a lion (guaranteeing 92.5% silver purity), and the date letter (year of manufacture).
Silver plated cutlery is made from the alloy nickel silver, electroplated with a layer of pure silver. For our cutlery this layer is produced to a thickness of 35 microns guaranteed to last for fifty years.
Our Commitment To Quality
A canteen of silver cutlery is a considerable investment. When you buy it you want to be sure that it is of the best quality, good enough to last not only through your lifetime but also your children's.
Our table cutlery is made in Sheffield, England by cutlers and silversmiths working to the highest standards of traditional craftsmanship. Cutlery has been made in Sheffield for hundreds of years and has been one of the city's leading industries since the late nineteenth century.
Our cutlery is hand set and hand finished by individual silversmiths and it is this, together with the weight of the silver in each piece, that defines the quality. During the process of hand setting, the craftsman will carefully taper the prongs of each form and shape the heads and stems of each spoon and fork into a pleasing curve. This not only makes it more comfortable to hold and use, but also ensures that each piece will sit more elegantly on your dining table. The cutlery is hand polished to ensure no loss of crispness in the pattern as can happen when machine polishing is relied upon.
